The Food and Drug Administration has warned consumers that taking prescription drugs like Nexium and Protonix could cause serious health problems such as heart attack and stroke, heart failure and kidney damage, according to a letter from the FDA.

The letter was sent by an FDA panel in September 2010 to health professionals at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which found that many prescription drugs that contain certain ingredients found in prescription drugs can cause serious health problems.

In a statement released Tuesday, FDA officials said, “FDA has determined that prescription drugs containing aluminum, magnesium, and calcium, such as Nexium, Protonix and Zantac, and other prescription drugs that contain aluminum, magnesium, calcium or aluminum-containing ingredients should not be taken at the recommended doses.

“FDA will continue to monitor the safety of these products and will provide information about their long-term effectiveness and side effects, including how long they last and how often they can be taken,” said FDA Commissioner Michael Leavitt.

The FDA has asked drug manufacturers to discontinue use of prescription drugs that contain these ingredients, as well as those that contain more than one ingredient that should not be taken at the recommended doses.

FDA warned consumers that this letter from the FDA, which was released in September 2010, said that “the drug manufacturers should not be allowed to market drugs containing aluminum, magnesium, or calcium, or other products that have serious side effects, including heart failure, heart attack, stroke, and kidney problems, or that have been associated with certain other drugs or medical conditions.”
